So today was the day I finally decided to fix both wheel bearings. I took the mechanic recommended by an Oppo and they were absolutely super with me.
Turns out, the dead bearings are both rear ones, not the front! How did I find this out? Well not only did the mechanic spin the wheels while it was on the lift, but I drove it with the engine lid off. Sure enough, the noise does come from the rear, with the noise being so loud that it echoes through the car. I always thought the sound was coming from the front!!!
Crap, anyone need two front bearings for a smart?

The car has like a 14 inch wheelbase. Don't blame you for thinking a sound coming from the front is actually in the rear, lol.

Don’t hate! The wheelbase is more like 30 inches.

Well, if the rears went, it can’t be too long until the fronts go also, right? Can’t hurt to have extra parts. (Says the guy who has three extra power steering belts because he accidentally double ordered)

I would hang on to the front bearings as someday they will go and then you will have the parts on hand when you need them. You my not need them now but as soon as you sell them you are going to.

What doesn't a cafe racer make a good ground speed check on Craigslist?

You might as well hang onto those front bearings. Either you’ll need them eventually or you can sell them with the car when the time comes.

Sorry you have some surplus parts now, but glad the noise is pinned down and that you found someone solid to take care of it!

I mentioned you to my wife a day or two ago, that I hadn’t seen you in a while, so I looked you up! Glad to hear that things are looking up.
